History

Legends tell the Maine Coon is the result of an impossible love between an American lynx and a raccoon. He should have taken some physical features from the two species: the lynx tips, tufts of hair on the tip of the ears, thick long coat and ruff by lynx; the long tail with rings from the raccoon. Certainly the breed took its name from this: Maine as the U.S. state in the north- east, on the border with Canada, where he was spotted for the first time; and Coon, the contraction of raccoon. The earliest report of a Maine Coon cat goes back to 1861, when the American writer Pierce turned out to have one.

Later, it was presented to the first cat shows, but its initial success was soon eclipsed by the arrival of the cats from the Orient and over all the Persian cats. Only in 1953 the first club was founded, promoting their selection and spread worldwide. Since then, the popularity and the love for this breed have increased exponentially, making the Maine Coon one of the most bred in our Country and all over the world.
